Rabinowitz, Saul Phinehas (Sepher)

(1845-90)

   Polish Hebrew writer and Zionist leader, of Lithuanian origin. He lived in Warsaw where he was initially attracted to Jewish nationalism and later to Zionism. After the pogroms of 1881, he helped to organize the emigration of Jewish refugees. He was secretary of the Kattowitz Conference of Hibbat Zion in 1884, and subsequently secretary of the movement's Warsaw office. He contributed to Hebrew journalism, edited the annual Keneset Yisrael in 1886-8, translated Heinrich Graetz's History of the Jews into Hebrew, and wrote studies of the Jews exiled from Spain in the 1490s.
